Launch of the First Outbound Operation
On March 5th and 6th, 2024 Tactical Resiliency USA launched its first outbound operation to heal the heroes of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office through the agency Wellness Grant. Suzy Powell-Roos the Wellness Coordinator for the agency was placed in contact with us through a mutual acquaintance. She had heard of the work we were doing at 22ZERO with veterans and first responders.
Suzy sat through two sessions with me and transformed everything.
An interesting fact about Suzy is she was an Olympic Athlete in track and field and performed on 4 separate olympic teams and other international venues. She is the perfect person for this position as she understands human potential and performance.
She is tasked with guiding the wellness of the Sheriff’s Office led by Sheriff Jeff Dirkse. Sheriff Dirkse is a West Point Graduate and combat commander in the Infantry and served in Iraq. The Sheriff is trying his hardest to change the culture in Law Enforcement beginning with his agency first.
Tactical Resiliency Workshop
Dan Jarvis, the organizational founder, and an Army Combat veteran and former Deputy Sheriff along with Abel Rodrigues, retired 7th Special Forces and Army Combat Veteran arrived March 4th and departed March 7th to conduct the Tactical Resiliency Workshop.
I will say the most interesting part of this equation is that the department is leading from the front. Two Captains were the first to go through sessions to see if this is real. Needless to say we were invited and for 2 days healed their heroes. The feedback was 100 percent positive.
Over two days we were able to work with 10 Deputies, ranging from homicide detectives to SWAT members. Men and women experiencing significant traumatic stress in the workplace. I found it about normal that each member addressed a minimum of 8 traumatic incidents from work to early childhood trauma. The followup feedback is consistent with improved sleep and a sense of calmness.
Treatment Methods and Results
The method of treatment we used for this team was the Tactical Resiliency Peer Rescue for 9 of the individuals and one shifted to the Trauma Resiliency Protocol for a super intense traumatic event. The TRPR is fitting for traumatic stress and negative emotions in most of the individuals and TRP just adds another layer of dissociation. The one with the most tools wins.
The Oakland Police Department also sent a Sergeant from their mental health unit. He was also a former Green Beret in the United States Army. One of his issues he dealt with was claustrophobia. He reported the following day better sleep and no problems with his MRI, which is what he was worried about. No matter the fear or traumatic stressor the brain can heal itself quickly and efficiently.
Next Steps
Our next step is to return to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office to train their peer support team, a chaplain and their Crisis Negotiators. Suzy will also be getting trained in April in a remote online training to have their first inhouse person with the skills necessary to heal their heroes.
